CITB estimates the UK will need more than 251,500 additional construction workers by 2029. Hiring people to absorb records competes for the same scarce staff, which is why removing the production is a better lever than adding capacity to it.

What makes a quality record defensible?
That it can answer a specific question about a specific piece of work: what was checked, where exactly, when, by whom, against which requirement, and what happened to anything that failed. A record missing any of those still costs the same to produce and proves much less. Contemporaneity matters as much as content, because a record written at the time carries weight that a reconstruction written the following week does not. Indexing matters too, since a defensible record that cannot be retrieved within a reasonable time is not much use in a dispute.
How should non-conformance reports be handled?
Raised promptly, described factually, actioned against a named owner, and evidenced as closed rather than assumed closed. The pattern we see most often is an NCR raised, resolved informally on site, and never recorded as resolved, so the register shows an open item long after the work was put right. That is the item an auditor or a client finds. Tracking closure with the evidence attached fixes the record without changing who decides whether the non-conformance has actually been resolved, which stays with your quality lead.
