What these tools are not
- The calculator is an estimateIt multiplies three numbers you supply. It is a planning figure for a conversation, not a measurement of your business, and the saving range is conservative rather than promised.
- The pack check is a review, not an approvalIt tells you what the documents say about each other. The decision to accept a pack stays with your competent person, and no CDM 2015 duty moves anywhere.
- Neither commits you to anythingThere is no follow-up sequence attached to the calculator, and the pack check ends with the findings unless you ask for something more.

Start with the pack check if you have a pack in front of you
It answers a concrete question: is this submission internally consistent, and what would a careful reader find in it? You get named findings against real documents rather than a general opinion about your processes.
It is also the honest way to judge whether cross-document checking is worth anything to you, because it runs on your own paperwork rather than a demonstration file.
Start with the calculator if you are sizing the problem
It answers a different question: how much is documentation costing the firm across a year, and how many full-time roles is that equivalent to? That is the number worth taking into a conversation about whether to do anything at all.
If the figure it returns is small, that is a real answer. We would rather you knew that before spending anything.

How do you check a subcontractor RAMS pack?
Read the pack as one submission and compare the documents against each other, because that is where the real problems sit. The checks that matter are the figures that must agree across documents, plant and substances that need a matching assessment somewhere in the pack, controls that are missing from the document where they count, references and revisions that do not line up, and sign-offs that are absent or out of date. Documents you send for a free pack check are used only to produce your report. Remove personal data before you send.
